This article covers features and scenarios that are not currently supported in ViralSweep. Where a workaround exists, we've included it below.
Duplicating a promotion into a different promotion type
You can duplicate an existing promotion, but only into the same promotion type. It is not possible to clone a Sweepstakes into a Purchases promotion, or vice versa.
Workaround: Create the new promotion type from scratch. If you need both free entries and purchase-based entries feeding into the same raffle, create two separate promotions — one Sweepstakes and one Purchases — then connect them so entries are pooled together for winner selection.
Awarding fixed bonus entries for a Shopify purchase via Custom Action
Shopify no longer supports custom scripts on the Thank You page (the page shown after checkout completes). Because of this, the Custom Action completion script — which awards entries when a participant finishes an action — cannot be reliably triggered after a Shopify purchase.
Workaround: To award entries for a Shopify purchase, use a Shopify Purchase Promotion instead of a Custom Action. This uses a ViralSweep widget placed on the Thank You or Order Status page and is the supported method for tracking purchases on Shopify. If you want both free email signup entries and purchase-based bonus entries, create one Sweepstakes promotion and one Purchases promotion, then connect them.
Klaviyo Integration Limitation
ViralSweep’s Klaviyo integration only sends contacts who complete a regular sweepstakes sign-up form. Entrants generated from Shopify purchase-based sweepstakes (order/purchase entries) are not sent to Klaviyo lists. Workaround: Use regular sweepstakes sign-ups for Klaviyo integration.
Phone-Only Shopify Orders
For Shopify orders that include only a phone number and no email, ViralSweep assigns a placeholder email in the format [email protected] to ensure the order is recorded. This is an automatic behavior and does not require user intervention.
Order Status Page Widget Behavior
The ViralSweep widget on the Shopify Order Status page may not display entries, images, giveaway titles, or action options until a valid qualifying purchase is made. Shopify now renders most app widgets as app embeds rather than through theme edits, which can affect the widget’s appearance. Despite these visual differences, entries are recorded, and users can access their entries and actions via provided links or buttons.
Shopify Plus Limitation
Users not on Shopify Plus can still use ViralSweep Purchases to automatically award entries from Shopify orders. However, they cannot add a widget to the Shopify Checkout page, as this feature is exclusive to Shopify Plus stores. Other installation methods still track orders and award entries automatically.
Test Orders Limitation
Shopify test-mode or test orders cannot be used to award entries in a ViralSweep purchase promotion. Only real orders with actual payments are tracked and can award entries.
